Walks and bike trails on Kilvey Hill
Kilvey Hill is a young community woodland with heath, wetland and meadow, and wide views across Swansea and the bay. Here is what you can do on it now, while Skyline Swansea is being built.
What's open now
- Open: the hill as a whole. Walkers can still use it during construction.
- Crossing the hill: you can still walk between Bonymaen and St Thomas. Where the path meets the building site, follow the signed diversion.
- Fenced off: active building areas, such as the luge track earthworks and the gondola route.
- Diverted: the main public footpath over the hill, for as long as the works last.

Walking on the hill
Swansea Council describes Kilvey Hill as a community woodland of about 3 km², managed by the Kilvey Community Woodland Volunteers, Forest Enterprise and the council. Permissive paths cross the site, and it has some of the best views over the city and Swansea Bay (Swansea Council).
We have not yet published named, measured routes. Route lengths and times are to be confirmed once diversions settle down.
Wildlife to look out for
The council lists birds such as skylark, nightjar, linnet, peregrine, redwing, song thrush, fieldfare, raven and whitethroat. The rare small blue butterfly has also been recorded here. Parts of the hill are Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (Swansea Council).
Mountain biking
Kilvey Hill already has mountain bike trails. Skyline says the existing trails will be kept and improved, and that about 1.25 miles of new trails are planned. Final routes and difficulty grades are still being worked out (Skyline FAQ, Skyline home page).
Which bike trails are open today: to be confirmed. Skyline does not publish a separate bike trail status, so use its access map and obey fencing and signs on the hill.
Tips while work is going on
- Stick to signed paths and diversions, and never go past fencing.
- Where a banksman is managing a crossing, wait for them to wave you through.
- Expect some paths to be muddy or changed from how you remember them.
More walks nearby
- Lower Swansea Valley heritage trails: the council lists the Swansea Canal Heritage Trail (about 2.3 km) and the Parc Llewelyn Heritage Trail (about 1.8 km), and points to the Tawe Trails Walking app (Swansea Council).
- Swansea Bay promenade: flat and surfaced, good for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and open to cyclists along its whole length (Swansea Council).
- Crymlyn Bog National Nature Reserve is a short distance east of the hill (Swansea Council).
