Getting to Kilvey Hill
Kilvey Hill sits on the east side of Swansea, between St Thomas, Bonymaen and the River Tawe. You can walk in from the surrounding streets, park at the woodland car park, or use Landore Park & Ride on the other side of the river.
On foot
Swansea Council says permissive paths cross the hill and that you can walk in from St Thomas and Bonymaen. The council gives the grid reference as SS675940, on OS Explorer map 165 (Swansea) (Swansea Council).
While building work goes on, you can still cross the hill between Bonymaen and St Thomas. Where a path crosses the building site, a signed temporary route takes you around it (Skyline access update, 11 August 2026).
By car: the woodland car park
Swansea Council's directions: take the A4217 out of Swansea Docks, and after about 1 km the Kilvey Hill Community Woodland car park is on your right (Swansea Council). Parking charges and opening times: to be confirmed.
Landore Park & Ride
This is where the Skyline gondola will start. It is on the west bank of the river, near the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks and the Swansea.com Stadium.
| Address | Cross Valley Link Road, Landore, Swansea SA1 2JT |
|---|---|
| From the M4 | Junction 45 (Ynysforgan), then follow signs to Swansea for about 3 miles |
| Car park open | 6.45am to 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday |

Changes during construction: the old bus terminal building has been demolished, part of the car park is fenced off as a building site, and there are fewer parking spaces. The Park & Ride bus stop has moved across the road to Loverose Way (Skyline update, Skyline FAQ).
After Skyline opens: Skyline says the Park & Ride will keep running until opening, and then the site will become a car park for Skyline and Penderyn visitors. The council is working on a replacement Park & Ride car park nearby; details are to be confirmed (Skyline FAQ).
Note: the Park & Ride is across the river from the hill, and the gondola is not running yet. Until it opens, it is not a quick way to reach the summit on foot.
By bus
Swansea Council says buses run regularly from the city centre to St Thomas, Bonymaen and the Enterprise Zone, and that you can walk into the woodland from there (Swansea Council). For times, use Traveline Cymru. We don't list route numbers here because they change.
Access changes during construction
- Hill open: public access is kept throughout. Fences go around active work areas only (Skyline, 1 July 2026).
- Main footpath diverted: the main public footpath over the hill is on a temporary diversion for as long as the works last. Skyline says the alternative route has been widened and cleared, and it is signposted (Skyline FAQ).
- Banksman: where a path crosses an active work site, a banksman manages safe crossing (Skyline, July 2026).
- Map: Skyline keeps a map of open, closed and diverted paths on its access page. Check it before you go.
- Road closure, Sunday 1 November 2026, 8am to 5pm: the southbound A4217 between Brunel Way and White Rock Roundabout will be closed, with a diversion through Landore and Hafod via Brunel Way, Morfa Road and New Cut (A483). Pentre-Chwyth Road (B5444) stays open, with temporary traffic lights near the junction. Expect more traffic on Foxhole Road and Kilvey Road (Skyline, WalesOnline).
